WHY TITHES AND OFFERINGS?

MEANING

The Hebrew word for tithe (ma’ser) literally means, "a tenth part".

REQUIREMENT

God required the tithe and established it in his law.

Leviticus 27:30-32 30. "`A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. 31. If a man redeems any of his tithe, he must add a fifth of the value to it. 32. The entire tithe of the herd and flock--every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd's rod--will be holy to the LORD.

Numbers 18:21, 26 21. "I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the Tent of Meeting. 26. "Speak to the Levites and say to them: `When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the LORD's offering.

Deuteronomy 14:22-29 22. Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23. Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. 24. But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the LORD your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25. then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose. 26. Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice. 27. And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own. 28. At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns,

29. so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

RECOGNITION

It was to be given in recognition of how God had blessed his people, realizing it all belongs to God anyway.

Exodus 19:5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,

Psalms 24:1 The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it

Psalms 50:10-12 10. for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11. I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12. If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

Haggai 2:8 `The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty.

USE

The tithe was to be committed to the Levites (the priestly tribe) and to be used for the expense of worship and to support the priest. In the New Testament God makes it clear that he holds his people responsible for managing the resources he gives them.

Matthew 25:14-30 14. "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15. To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16. The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17. So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18. But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. 19. "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20. The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. `Master,' he said, `you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' 21. "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' 22. "The man with the two talents also came. `Master,' he said, `you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' 23. "His master replied, `Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' 24. "Then the man who had received the one talent came. `Master,' he said, `I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25. So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' 26. "His master replied, `You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27. Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28. "`Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29. For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

CONCERN

If we are more concerned about our own financial gain than we are with God’s law, that we neglect the paying of our tithes. God will not bless our finances.

Haggai 1:3-6 3. Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: 4. "Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?" 5. Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways. 6. You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it."

Malachi 3:9-12 9. You are under a curse--the whole nation of you--because you are robbing me. 10. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. 12. "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty.

ATTITUDE

Bottom line is we need to recognize that everything is God’s anyway to include the air that we breathe. We need to decide to serve God and not money.

Matthew 6:19-24 19. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22. "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24. "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

2 Corinthians 8:1-5 1. And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4. they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. 5. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will.

Greed is a form of idolatry.

Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

When we give we give to the Lord for the purpose of advancing his kingdom, and to advance the work of the local church in spreading the gospel throughout the world.

1 Corinthians 9:4-14 4. Don't we have the right to food and drink? 5. Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas ? 6. Or is it only I and Barnabas who must work for a living? 7. Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk? 8. Do I say this merely from a human point of view? Doesn't the Law say the same thing? 9. For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10. Surely he says this for us, doesn't he? Yes, this was written for us, because when the plowman plows and the thresher threshes, they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11. If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12. If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. 13. Don't you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? 14. In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.

Philippians 4:15-18 15. Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16. for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I was in need. 17. Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account. 18. I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

1 Timothy 5:17-18 17. The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18. For the Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain," and "The worker deserves his wages."

Help those who are in need.

Proverbs 19:17 He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.

Galatians 2:10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

2 Corinthians 8:14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality,

Giving causes treasures to be laid up in heaven for us, and teaches us to revere the Lord.

Matthew 6:20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Deuteronomy 14:23 23. Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always.

Giving should be voluntary and generous.

Exodus 25:1-2 1. The LORD said to Moses, 2. "Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from each man whose heart prompts him to give.

2 Chronicles 24:8-11 8. At the king's command, a chest was made and placed outside, at the gate of the temple of the LORD. 9. A proclamation was then issued in Judah and Jerusalem that they should bring to the LORD the tax that Moses the servant of God had required of Israel in the desert. 10. All the officials and all the people brought their contributions gladly, dropping them into the chest until it was full. 11. Whenever the chest was brought in by the Levites to the king's officials and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal secretary and the officer of the chief priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this regularly and collected a great amount of money.

The most important thing to God is the sacrifice. Does our offering represent a genuine sacrifice? Romans 12:1 says that we are to present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, this is our reasonable act of worship. True worship will cost us something, but the benefits of true worship far out weigh the cost. We really only begin to worship when we worship out of our need and of course worship and giving cannot be separated.

Luke 21:1-4 1. As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3. "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

We should give cheerfully.

2 Corinthians 9:7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Exodus 35:21-29 21. and everyone who was willing and whose heart moved him came and brought an offering to the LORD for the work on the Tent of Meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments. 22. All who were willing, men and women alike, came and brought gold jewelry of all kinds: brooches, earrings, rings and ornaments. They all presented their gold as a wave offering to the LORD. 23. Everyone who had blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen, or goat hair, ram skins dyed red or hides of sea cows brought them. 24. Those presenting an offering of silver or bronze brought it as an offering to the LORD, and everyone who had acacia wood for any part of the work brought it. 25. Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what she had spun--blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen. 26. And all the women who were willing and had the skill spun the goat hair. 27. The leaders brought onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece. 28. They also brought spices and olive oil for the light and for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense. 29. All the Israelite men and women who were willing brought to the LORD freewill offerings for all the work the LORD through Moses had commanded them to do.

2 Chronicles 24:10 All the officials and all the people brought their contributions gladly, dropping them into the chest until it was full.

Give in Love and Worship

1. Genesis 4:3-5 3And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an

offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 5but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

2. John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

Now before I move on to God’s promise and the conclusion I wanted to point out this passage in Genesis 4 and John 4. It is God’s desire that we worship him in spirit and in truth and this is exactly what Cain did not do. He came before the Lord with bitterness and deception in his heart toward his brother. Therefore, he could not properly worship the Lord. It was for this reason the Lord rejected his offering, not because what he offered was of no value compared to Abel’s – the offering itself had little if anything to do with it, but the heart of the ones bringing the offering had everything to do with it. In fact this principle is repeated by Jesus in the New Testament, look at Matthew 5:23, 24 23Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.  If you think I am quoting out of context that’s okay, you’re entitled to your opinion. But look at the principle of the passage. Broken relationships between us affect the guilty parties’ ability to worship God. I don’t believe for one moment that Abel had anything against his brother Cain, that’s why the Lord accepted Abel’s offering. Likewise, we can have a genuine worship encounter with God, while unbeknownst to us a brother or sister cannot, because for whatever reason they are bitter, envious, jealous toward/of us. So then if we attempt to bring anything to the Lord as an offering and our heart is not right toward our brother/sister, the Lord will not accept our offering. Instead, we must repent and then bring our offering to God. I believe that many in the church today are being rejected by God, just as Cain was, because their relationship is not right with their brother or sister. These people are on dangerous ground.

GOD’S PROMISE

God has promised to reward us according to how we have given to him. It’s really all about gratitude and not penance or any other fleshly work. We cannot buy our salvation, healing, spiritual gifts or anything else. However, if we are truly saved then we will have no problem giving and for the right reasons. God’s promises below are the natural byproduct of worshiping God in all our ways especially our tithes and offerings.

Deuteronomy 15:4 However, there should be no poor among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you,

Malachi 3:10-12 10.

Matthew 19:21 21. Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

1 Timothy 6:18-19 18. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

2 Corinthians 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

CONCLUSION

Some say that tithing is not taught as a New Testament principle, but I disagree—It is one of God’s commands. Jesus said to us in Matthew 5:17 that he did not come to do away with the law but to fulfill it. What Jesus did was made it a matter of the heart bringing us closer to God, and if we truly love him we will obey his commands John 14:15. Also he said in Matthew 23:22 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. This makes it pretty clear that the Lord’s desire is that we too not neglect the paying of our tithes.

As we learn to commit to God we will not give our tithes and offerings just so we will be blessed. No, we will give because the tithe is required of God (10% of our income) as an act of obedience and reverence. Anything above our tithe, is our offering. This too will be given because of our commitment to, and love for God. In giving we show our willingness to become servants of God. Mark 10:45 says "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." We are to follow his example and make ourselves servants.

The bottom line however is this: God does not need our tithes or offerings; it’s not that He’s poor and dependant upon them. The truth is we need them, because if we don’t worship Him in our tithes and offerings then He cannot and will not open the windows of heaven and poor out upon us any blessing. When we ourselves do not worship God in this capacity, we become roadblocks on the narrow road to heaven and we actually keep souls out of the kingdom. It all boils down to spirit and truth worship – if we do not worship God in our giving, then we don’t worship Him period! Will you worship God with me?
